Doha International Airport Transfer Baggage Facility (TBF)
Doha International Airport is a major hub for Qatar Airways, the national carrier of the Arabian Gulf State of Qatar and one of the world’s fastest growing airlines flying to more than 70 destinations worldwide.

Qatar Airways & Doha International Airport’s phenomenal growth has been due to the fact that 80% of the passengers they handle are transiting between anyone of the airlines 70 destinations such as Cape Town to London Heathrow for example.

With rapid connections times a necessity when transiting through a major airport it is essential that not only the passenger is processed efficiently and in a timely manner but also their baggage. Recognising that Logan Teleflex have a great deal of experience with Transfer Baggage Facilities having previously installed such systems at London Gatwick & CDG Paris plus other major airport hubs they were selected to provide a totally standalone Transfer Baggage Facility at DIA capable of screening & sorting 2,500 bags per hour to the 70 destinations.

To enable the Transfer Baggage Facility to be designed to meet the expected throughput, assessment of a number of issues had to be initially carried out. These included such information as predicted flight scheduled, maximum number of passengers per aircraft type and expected loading factor, percentage of passengers transferring and average number of bags they will have, plus various other issues that would impact on the sizing of the facility.

Once this initial information had been processed and reviewed with Mr Akbar Al Baker the CEO of Qatar Airways then the design of facility was frozen and work commenced on bring the unit into operation within the targeted 6 month allotted timeframe.

The following is a general description of the Transfer Bag Facility generally as indicated in the above layout.

• 2 – Baggage transportation system for in-gauge bags
• 2 – 100% Hold Baggage Screening L1/2 screening system.
• 1 – Level 3 screening area
• 2 – Horizontal baggage make-up carousel.
• 2 stand alone x-ray lines for OOG bags

Bags are manually entered into the system on one of the two baggage unloading conveyors; the prime route is for bags to be transported to one of the two screening lines via general transport conveyors. Prior to arriving at the level 1 / 2 X-ray machine, the bags travel through a series conveyors which conditions the baggage before entering the 100% HBS x-ray line. After being processed by the level 1 / 2 X-rays the bags if cleared travel over a series of transport conveyors to the make-up carousels for loading into the containers ready for transportation out to the waiting aircraft. Bags that are still suspect after being processed through the level 1 / 2 EDS X-ray machines are automatically diverted to the level 3 CT machine for further more detailed inspection. Bag flow into the level 3 area is typically 5% of the total flow.

The unloading conveyors have the option to reverse; these bi-directional units allow bags to be sent for temporary storage into baggage racking along side the HBS line. This function is to be used when the throughput demand is too high for EDS X-ray machines. It enables large volumes of bags to be unloaded and the re-introduced when the throughput demand subsides.
