Glasgow International Airport - Terminal 2 Departures Extension
Glasgow International Airport is the busiest of Scotland’s three main international airports currently serving 8.7 million passengers per year with 50 airlines and around 100 destinations. There is continuing growth at the airport and the current master plan is based on the airport expanding to serve 30 million passengers per year by 2030.
Terminal 2 was built in response to growing demand from low frills airlines and charter companies. EasyJet and Mytravel predominantly operate from the facility which will handle over 1.5 million passengers per year.
By adding a further nine check-ins to the existing fifteen check-in positions, including a new line for Out of Gauge baggage, to support rising levels of passenger growth brought about by the expansion of low cost, no frills airlines, the airport required a departures baggage handling system that would meet the expectations of the airport operators, airlines and passengers.
Logan Teleflex provided the airport with a flexible, robust and reliable baggage system that was delivered within budget and on schedule.

Logan Teleflex were selected by BAA as the baggage framework partner for the project in late October 2003. At this stage BAA had developed a concept design together with an outline execution plan for delivering the baggage system. Logan Teleflex worked closely with the Airport Project Team during the initial stages of the project to ensure that the requirements and key objectives of the project were fully understood. Due to the challenging timescales it was then necessary for Logan Teleflex to rapidly take ownership and responsibility for delivering the baggage system. By mid December 2003 Logan Teleflex had developed a fully integrated design encompassing check-in desks and weighscales, HBS lines encompassing conveyors and vertical sortation systems, supporting steelwork, PLC control systems and MIS. In addition the design was fully co-ordinated within the constraints of the building to ensure that it could be operated and maintained safely. The integrated and co-ordinated design was fully supported by the Logan Teleflex execution plan which included a detailed programme and schedule.
In order to meet the demanding timescales involved on site Logan Teleflex used a sequence of offsite pre-assembly and testing much of which was carried out in a facility local to the airport. In addition Logan Teleflex utilised system simulation at their Hull premises to fully test the PLC control system and MIS to ensure that the amount of time required for onsite commissioning and testing.
The system was completed on time and within budget clearly demonstrating the benefits of detailed pre-planning and maximising off-site activities.
