£8.1 Million Manchester Baggage Handling Improvements
With the need for stringent security checks on all passenger baggage, a fully automated improvement scheme that will nearly double the baggage handling capacity in Manchester Airport’s Terminal 1 to 4800 bags per hour has been completed by worldwide baggage system integrators, Logan Teleflex.

For passengers flying out of Manchester Airport, the new system will improve check-in desk wait times and guarantee airline baggage transit times, whilst also providing the very latest in baggage security screening and a state-of-the-art information system for the airport’s management.

The Logan Teleflex team of designers worked with a project team from Manchester Airport to develop the design and critical project integration of the extended baggage handling facility in late 2001/early 2002. The scheme was implemented over the Winter period and was worked on by around 150 people from local Manchester companies during the peak of the project.

Erecting new buildings and reclaiming part of the car parking space were key to creating space for the new baggage system. In total, some 190 tons of steel was fabricated and 2,500 meters of conveyor and 8,400 meters of electrical cable were installed to support the system of transporting, sorting and x-raying passenger bags.

The improved baggage system is controlled and monitored by over 20 small computers and PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) – which feed data from the system and work together with strategically placed information and control screens.

John Edees of Logan Teleflex commented: “The new system has been installed with minimal disruption to passengers and airlines, and has allowed the continuing use of the Terminal 1 baggage facility at all times for the duration of the project.”
