Logan Teleflex (UK) Ltd. Island Hops with Greek Orders
Rhodes, Heraklion and Zakynthos are just three of the latest Greek Island airports to invest in expanded Arrival/Departures baggage handling systems in readiness for the busy summer holiday traffic.

With combined orders worth a total of £1.5 million, leading baggage system integrator,
Logan Teleflex (UK) Ltd. has installed a Departures system at Heraklion Airport in Crete, an Arrivals system at Zakynthos Airport on the island of Zante, and has another Departures system underway at Rhodes.

As well as supplying baggage solutions that meet the Greek CAA requirements and increased holiday charter flights, Logan Teleflex (UK) Ltd. has equipped the regional airports with baggage-handling solutions that utilise its latest portfolio of sortation, conveyor and carousel equipment - and a clear upgrade path to Hold Baggage Screening, should any of the airports wish to introduce HBS in the future.

Dave Reynolds, Sales Director of Logan Teleflex (UK) Ltd., said: “There is no HBS at the moment, as each baggage system incorporates a sterile check-in area principle, but it would be a straightforward upgrade to add HBS at a later stage.”

With regard to the range of Logan Teleflex (UK) Ltd. manufactured equipment introduced, Dave Reynolds added: ”Many airports find it easier to deal with one company that designs, manufactures and develops a range of sorters, check-in equipment, carousels and various conveyors that go to make up a complete baggage system. Our customers recognise this in Logan Teleflex and the economies of scale and ease of integration to be gained from such a move.”

About the systems
Heraklion essentially covers two independent Departures systems; one having nine, two-stage check-ins desks that feed baggage around the corner and down through the floor through to two incline make up carousels. The second line is smaller, having five, two-stage check-ins, which again feed around the corner down through the floor to an incline carousel.

Screening is via a sterile check-in area whereby passengers feed their bags through a manual x-ray machine prior to check-in. Although the system is required to process around 1000 bags per hour, it is capable of a throughput of 2000 bags per hour.

The baggage system at Rhodes is similar to that of Heraklion, and is being installed to cater for extended check-in requirements of up to 30 check-ins. The new system is housed in an extension to the Departures Terminal. The Arrivals and Departures Terminals are side by side. Three years ago the Arrivals area was extended to include a further two incline make up carousels, and now Logan Teleflex has expanded the Departures Terminal to include the extended check-in requirements.

The Zakynthos project consists of two Arrivals Carousels.
