Logan Teleflex Champions Baggage System Simulation at Glasgow
Logan Teleflex (UK) Ltd. has completed a number of baggage handling improvements at Glasgow Airport Terminal 1, most notably replacing one of the three main Departures systems.

The T1 upgrade work follows on from the recent installation by Logan Teleflex of a new HBS system at T2 that has allowed BAA to expand check in capabilities by adding a further nine check-ins to their existing 15 desks.

For the T2 project, Logan Teleflex developed a fully integrated design encompassing check-in desks and weigh scales, HBS lines encompassing conveyors and vertical sortation systems, supporting steelwork, PLC control systems and MIS. In addition the design was fully co-ordinated within the constraints of the building to ensure that it could be operated and maintained safely. The integrated and co-ordinated design was fully supported by the Logan Teleflex execution plan, which included a detailed programme and cost schedule.

By assessing and identifying risks early in the project, Logan Teleflex was able to introduce processes that would reduce or eliminate the risks of failure to meet costs and deadlines. A prime example was the concern that Logan Teleflex had with gaining access to T2 to install the first phase of 80 conveyors and steelwork. In order to overcome this hurdle, Logan Teleflex used a very structured sequence and offsite pre-assembly and testing.

Another technique that was used to minimise onsite testing and commissioning – and something that Logan Teleflex has been championing with BAA – is system simulation. At its offices in Hull, Logan Teleflex (UK) Ltd. mapped out onto a PC every single conveyor Drive Control Panel (used to marshal all the input and output signals to control each conveyor). This was then integrated with the PLC code and MIS system to create a mirror image of the baggage control system for Glasgow. From their desktops, Logan Teleflex personnel could simulate and accurately test the start/stop, and other operational conditions, in order to prove the robustness of the PLC code and the correct operation and functioning of the MIS.

Glasgow airport’s management were pleased with the outcome. Stewart Wingate, Customer Services Director at Glasgow Airport said, "We are delighted with the support we received from Logan Teleflex and our other contractors. We were able to deliver T2 on time and on budget, and that is largely the result of the tremendous team effort on the ground”.
