New System to Speed Up Baggage Transfer at Doha
|
Doha International Airport in Qatar, which is undergoing a multi billion dollar investment programme, will see baggage transfer rates drop significantly between connecting flights, following the installation of an automated baggage transfer system by systems integrator, Logan Teleflex UK.
Hull-based Logan Teleflex has designed and built a transfer system to not only provide fast rates of baggage transfer for up to 3,000 bags per hour between incoming and outgoing flights, but has included what is believed to the first inline automatic security screening up to Level 3 in the Middle East. This aspect of the system will further enhance baggage security beyond anything currently attainable in the Gulf region.
Working to a very tight time schedule; just six months from order placement to design, build and installation, Logan Teleflex has worked closely with Mr Akbar Al Baker, Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways and the CEO of Doha International Airport, to ensure that the demanding project specifications and timescale for completion were met. Doha is the major hub for Qatar Airways, the national carrier of the Arabian Gulf State of Qatar and one of the world’s fastest growing airlines.
Mr Akbar Al Baker commented: “The Transfer system is part of Qatar Airway’s significant investment in the hub at Doha International, to offer even faster connections across our fast growing network.”
Qatar Airways has increased its flights to 69 destinations, including new non-stop scheduled services between Doha and Berlin and daily flights to Manchester.
The Doha project includes the latest Multi View Technology (MVT) for automatic screening of Level 1 and Level 2 bags and full x-ray screening of Level 3 bags with a CT machine. Furthermore, the complete bag transfer layout has been designed and built so that it can be easily moved with the opening of phase 1 of the new state-of-the-art airport in 2008.
