Logan KSEC wins EURO 30 million
BHS contract for new Kunming International Airport project
Kunming Airport has awarded a baggage handling system (BHS) project worth EURO30 million to Logan KSEC.
Logan KSEC won the contract against stiff competition and is the largest project to date for the joint venture between the UK's Logan Teleflex and China's KSEC (Kunming Ship Building Equipment Company).
The BHS will be installed in a brand new facility that will replace the existing airport. The system is due for completion and commissioning in March 2011. The new airport is due to go live on 1 January 2012, making it the fourth largest in China and the main regional airport for Yunnan province.

The system has been designed in conjunction with the prominent Chinese airport consultancy IPPR. Spanning a total conveyor length of more than 10km, the system is managed using BagStage software and has a 26 PLC-based control system. It includes 200 check-ins, 12 make-up carousels, and two large Logan Teleflex Tilt Tray Sorters measuring a total length of over 700m. The system also includes 14 arrivals carousels.
The benefits of the advanced and unique Tilt Tray Sorters include flexibility for high volumes, the ability to handle large and irregular shaped items, without the need for infills, thanks to the advanced induction system used by the M700RF sorter which eliminates the need for tray infills by reliable accurate positioning of bag on tray. Importantly, these systems provide highly controlled sorting and virtually eliminate miss sorts due to miss-induction problems.
"Logan KSEC has primary responsibility for overall system design, which goes hand-in-hand with the manufacture, supply and installation of the system components. Logan will supervise the detailed mechanical and electrical engineering based on our original design. This will ensure that local Logan Teleflex experience will be included within the project and that the airport gains the full benefit of our expertise in designing advanced, baggage handling systems", says Dave Reynolds.
Having people on the ground in China was an important aspect of winning the BHS contract and affirms the decision to establish the Logan KSEC joint venture.
"We have seen competitive situations recently where only 60 per cent of the project scope has been planned for local Chinese provision. Whereas Logan KSEC is able to provide a 75:25 ratio split, with the largest portion of product, its installation and commissioning labour coming from China. With the Kunming Airport project, we are now recognised among the three largest and most important manufacturers in China", concludes Dave Reynolds.
