New Check-in System Brings to Together ‘Best of Breed' Technology
Logan Teleflex Inc. is playing a crucial role in the development of a state-of-the-art check-in system now being tested by Alaska Airlines in a bid to reduce waiting times and ease the workload of check-in staff.

The US subsidiary company of Hull-based Logan Teleflex (UK) Ltd. supplied the baggage conveying technology as part of a US$1 million propotype check-in system that Alaska Airlines began using on 6th June with selected flights at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

Designed to separate the two main check-in processes - issuing of boarding passes and baggage tagging - the near self service check-in routine allows passengers to check themselves in up to 24 hours prior to departure. They can do this from their home computer, or by using special local hotel and airport terminal electronic ticketing kiosks that will also print out their boarding pass.

Prior to departure, passengers proceed to numerous interconnected ‘baggage drop-off points’ - centralised within the airport ticketing lobby –where their boarding pass is checked and their luggage tagged and despatched.

Logan Teleflex Inc. designed and installed the centralised system of baggage drop-off points, which feature sloping conveyor belts to carry baggage from floor level up to the height of the main conveyor. Lifting large volumes of fishing crates, tool boxes and gun cases has been a key source of injury to airline workers in the past.

Although passengers will still be able to use traditional check-in desks, the new system has the advantage of reducing the check-in process to less than a minute, and giving passengers a near straight-line path from entering the airport doors, to ending up at the gate to board their aircraft.

Mike Jeffery, Managing Director of Logan Teleflex (UK) Ltd. said: “We are delighted to have been selected by Alaska Airlines to bring our baggage handling skills, knowledge and expertise to bear on such a cutting edge project. Overall, the design and performance of the prototype system has exceeded the expectations of Alaska Airlines.”

Alaska Airlines plans to install the final version in Anchorage’s new Concourse C which opens in two years, and eventually hopes to roll out similar systems at other major locations served by the airline.
